  2. INSTALLATION NOTES FOR PAGEMAKER 5.0 TRIAL VERSION

  5. The following information was not available when the
  6. PageMaker 5.0 Trial Version installation instructions 
  7. went to press. Please read these notes before installing 
  8. the PageMaker 5.0 Trial Version.

  11. Streamlining installation performance
  12. =====================================
  13.  
  14. A low BUFFERS setting in your CONFIG.SYS file can 
  15. substantially increase the time it takes to install 
  16. PageMaker. For that reason, the Aldus Setup program 
  17. will alert you if the BUFFERS setting in your 
  18. CONFIG.SYS file is less than 20. For optimal 
  19. installation performance, consider increasing the 
  20. BUFFERS statement in your CONFIG.SYS to 50.

  23. IMPORTANT: make a system diskette that contains 
  24. a backup copy of the CONFIG.SYS before editing it, 
  25. as an editing error can cause your system to function 
  26. improperly. If you do edit CONFIG.SYS, you will need 
  27. to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. 
  28. Refer to your Windows or DOS documentation for details 
  29. on CONFIG.SYS.

  31. Disk-caching software, such as Windows SMARTDrive, can 
  32. supplement the DOS file buffering system. If your caching 
  33. program is set up to cache the reading of files from your 
  34. floppy drive, you will not need to change your buffers 
  35. setting. In general, using SMARTDrive or another disk-
  36. caching program helps ensure optimal installation. Windows 
  37. is typically setup to run SMARTDrive automatically. If for 
  38. some reason SMARTDrive is not installed on your system, or 
  39. if you want to change its settings, refer to your Windows 
  40. documentation for instructions.

  43. Making sure hard drive space is available
  44. =========================================

  46. You will need approximately 2MB more free space on your
  47. hard drive than the Aldus Setup program informs you during
  48. installation.

  51. Preparing to install the printer drivers
  52. ========================================
  53.  
  54. You cannot print to a PostScript or a non-PostScript 
  55. printer with the PageMaker 5.0 Trial Version until you 
  56. install the newest Microsoft printer drivers included 
  57. on the Trial Version disks. Older printer drivers 
  58. (included with Windows 3.1) do not support the newer 
  59. printer driver technology required by PageMaker 5.0.

  61. To install the printer drivers included with PageMaker, 
  62. follow the steps outlined in the PM5PRINT.WRI file, which 
  63. appears as the "Important Printer Info" file in the Aldus
  64. group in the Windows Program Manager.

  67. Launching PageMaker 5.0 after installation

  70. If you launch PageMaker from the File Manager, be sure 
  71. to click the file "pm5tv.exe" as opposed to "pm5apptv.exe."
